CAROLENA'S
BIO
Carolena Nericcio, director and founder of FatChanceBellyDance,
has been dancing for over 30 years. In 1987 she created the concept
of American Tribal Style Bellydance (ATS), a performance art form
using a foundation of Middle Eastern "bellydance" yet
stylized and adapted for a contemporary American audience. It
is a blend of cultural dance influences from India, Spain, North
Africa and beyond.
Her troupe, FatChanceBellyDance, is a Bay Area phenomenon that
has become known around the world. Audiences delight at the exuberance,
vitality, beauty and power expressed by the strong and agile dancers.
The majestic costuming, including full headdresses and layers
of ethnic jewelry, celebrate the folkart of the old world. The
music, a carefully chosen collection of both traditional sounds
and modern fusion adds to the effect...Tribal Style looks "old"
but it is actually "new."
Carolena has developed a method of improvisational choreography,
using a vocabulary of natural movements and cues allowing the
dancers to communicate via gesture when dancing together. The
effect is a vibrant thread drawing the audience into the tapestry.
An American Council on Exercise certified personal trainer, Carolena
incorporates the science of anatomy and fitness into her classes
and workshops. Eleven DVDs (performance, instruction and documentary)
were produced with the help of a series of grants from the California
Arts Council. Author of "Belly Dance, a fun and fabulous
way to get fit" for Barnes and Noble publishers. Most recently
the Folkwear pattern company worked together with Carolena to
produce a pattern and make-up booklet based on the Tribal Style
costume made popular by Carolena and FatChanceBellyDance.
Carolena and FCBD perform at major events such as the San Francisco
Ethnic Dance Festival as well as many clubs and festivals and
have produced four theatrical stage shows in San Francisco.* (*The
Gypsy Trail, 1995 at Theatre Artaud, Diamonds, Shells & Amber,
1998 at Cowell Theatre, San Francisco Beledi, 2002 at the Victoria
Theater and Musette Arabe, 2003 at the Magic Theater.)
At the FatChanceBellyDance Studio in the Mission District of San
Francisco one can find weekly classes in ATS, a store providing
instructional DVDs, music, books, costumes, jewelry, cosmetics
and accessories and a Resource Center complete with archival videos,

TRIBE
MARRAKECH'S BIO
A true sisterhood, Tribe Marrakech is Elizabeth Ostteen, and Chris
Chambers, both of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Combining their
backgrounds in ATS and Tribal Fusion, Tribe Marrakech has become
part of a new breed of Tribal Dancers creating dance without boundaries
while maintaining a respect of those dancers who have come before.
Built upon a love for the dance, a desire to create, and a belief
that this dance can touch, change, and empower lives, Tribe Marrakech
combines a taste of the traditional with modern sensibilities
to produce a unique performance that has a life of its own. The
final production of a Tribe Marrakech performance relies upon
a "full package" where the music, the costume, and the
technique combine to send forth a single intention. Tribe Marrakech
enjoys the use of sharp technique as well as beautiful, fluid
movements.
Tribe Marrakech was founded in 2002 under the direction of Elizabeth
Ostteen. In the beginning, the troupe consisted of students from
Elizabeth's drum classes, and students from her dance classes,
and performed primarily to live music. The style that Tribe Marrakech
created was a fusion of several tribal dances, with a strong nod
toward Carolena Nericcio's American Tribal Style Belly Dance.
There are too many influences to name all of the dancers that
have inspired, motivated, and moved the troupe through the years,
each with a different style, yet we give special thanks to Jill
Parker, Heather Stants and Rachel Brice for the inspiration they
have provided. Tribe Marrakech continues to evolve, as the duo
of Elizabeth & Chris explore new territory, sometimes including
members of the Tribe Marrakech Express student troupe. Tribe Marrakech
believes that hard work is worth it, inspiration and guidance
always come through, and that finding the joy of the dance is
the most important part.
About
Elizabeth Ostteen:
Elizabeth Ostteen is the founder and director of Tribe Marrakech.
She has been teaching and performing bellydance since 2002. In
addition to performing and creating within Tribe Marrakech and
teaching up to 6 belly dance classes a week, Elizabeth directs
her student troupe, Tribe Marrakech Express, and performs as a
solo dancer. She also teaches Tribal Fusion style workshops and
performs throughout the United States.
In 1998, Elizabeth began her own business, which by 2001 was incorporated
into a storefront. She taught drum classes and hosted circles
within the import shop. By 2002, she began directing Tribe Marrakech
Drum and Dance Troupe, which consisted of student drummers and
dancers who accompanied Elizabeth's dancing and her husband, Ocean's
drumming.
In 2007, the business expanded to include 2 storefronts, both
of which have their own intimate dance studio- Marrakech in Evergreen
and Paprika in Golden, Colorado. In addition to teaching, performing,
and owning an exotic import business, Elizabeth and her husband
Ocean are also responsible for producing and promoting Elevation,
an event which has been bringing tribal style teachers to Colorado
since 2003.
Elizabeth's collaboration with her dance partner, Chris Chambers,
tops off her best artistic and creative endeavors. Teaching, creating,
and performing are the things that Elizabeth feels most passionately
about. Tribe Marrakech has performed with as many as 20 dancers,
which has included drummers, musicians, and student dancers. "It
is a joy to learn and grow in dance, and a blessing to share that
experience with others."
About
Chris Chambers:
Chris began dancing in 2001 in Brekenridge, Colorado, and soon
joined the Mountain Gypsy ATS Belly Dance Troupe in 2002. Chris
began passing on her love of the dance in 2003 while teaching
at the local college in Breckinridge. Chris has continued to teach
and dance since moving to Siverton, Colorado in 2005 with her
husband and young twins who are now beginning to explore this
world. Chris became a member of Tribe Marrakech in 2006, which
began their sisterhood of inspirational performance art collaboration
through tribal fusion dance.
Chris dances because it is a beautiful form of self-expression
that creates a strong connection between women and provides an
opportunity for creating something bigger than oneself.
"I dance for freedom, inspiration, grounding to the mother,
friendship, and connection to other women."

drummer. Learn what cymbal patterns to play with the rhythms.
Drummers, learn how to play for tribal dancers on drums and cymbals.
Bring your zils or any drum.
BIO
Raquy and the Cavemen of Brooklyn, NY, bring traditional Middle
Eastern music and modern drumming to a heady peak. Raquy has traveled
to many distant countries including those in the Middle East,
Egypt and India, where she has experienced and absorbed vast amounts
of musical culture. She uses all this knowledge to bring an amazing
act to the stage.
Raquy Danzinger performs with the Dumbek (Arabic hand drum) and
the Iranian Kamanche, which is much like a violin.
Raquy and the Cavemen allow the listener to experience the musical
cultures from The Middle East and Egypt and fuse them with Liron
Peled's hard rock drumming background. The name Cavemen is appropriate
due to the rawness of the beats, and there is also a timeless
property to the music that makes it impossible to dislike. The
whole experience of the music takes you on a journey to the roots
of Middle Eastern drumming and as soon as that kemenche starts
flowing the trip goes deeper. Its sound is like a close stare
into the eyes and soul of the Middle Eastern culture that lives
inside the music. Raquy brings forth the experience of an ancient
culture straight to the stage for everyone to reflect, react and
rotate to.
The love that each band member has for their instrument is especially
evident when they are all on stage. They move fluidly to the enchanted
drumming and mystical kemenche. Find one of their shows and be
enriched, encouraged and energized.
Their 1st CD, "DUST" (© 2003) has reached the top
20 on the CMJ chart for multiple weeks. Their 2nd CD "Jordan"
