the basics of Tunisian dance and how to integrate moves into a Tribal
Belly Dance repertoire. We'll first take a look at the traditional dance
and costuming and a modern interpretation. After a warm-up to prepare
our sides for a strenuous workout, we'll learn and drill a variety of

and dance to see how the adornment accentuates the movements. Finally
we'll discuss ideas to modernize the costuming and movements to fit
a Tribal repertoire. What to bring: Long piece of flowy material about
4-5 yards (knits work well, a veil as a pinch-hitter), safety pins,
2 long rectangular scarves and WATER. Please, no big skirts - yoga-style
pants or pantaloons preferred.

Bio: Janice Solimeno has been dancing since she was 9 - well, earlier
if you count dancing around the living room with her Mom! Ballet, Jazz,
Modern and (can you believe it?) Square Dancing until she was awed by
Tribal Belly Dance. Since then Janice has been the co-founder of The
Indigo with Rachel Brice, a core member of Jill Parker's Ultra Gypsy

Andrea McShane-Radoccio of Blue Dragon Belly Dance. Janice has been
teaching at her own studio in Half Moon Bay, California (Sol Studio)
since 2004 after completing Gypsy Caravan's Level 1 & 2 Teacher
Training Program with Paulette Rees-Denis. Currently, besides teaching

Class Title: Dramatic Body Language
Instructor: Tempest
Type of Class: Gothic Belly Dance
Skill Level: Everyone is Welcome
Description: At the heart of Gothic Belly Dance is the
ability to express deep emotions through the dance in a dramatic style.
While in theory, this makes sense, understanding how to make this happen
physically is another matter. How does one go about transferring matters
of the heart, mind, and spirit into a corporeal expression? In this
workshop, we learn to take regular belly dance movements and add Gothic
accents to them, focusing on expressing emotion, intent, and power through
our steps and presence. From facial expression to fingertips, we'll
be dissecting the accents that give Gothic Belly Dance extra substance,
drama, and excitement. You'll take home movement embellishments and
flourishes to incorporate into your own style. This class is especially
for any dancer who is ready to perform or is considering it.
Bio:
Tempest is an artist, designer, dancer, and writer currently based in
the Bay Area of California. Although she enjoys studying what tradition
has to offer, Tempest loves exploring the dance through unusual music
and creative costuming, pulling on her visual arts background to "paint
a picture" with the dance; engaging the audience
through
dramatic embodied storytelling, passionate expression, and sensuous,
mesmerizing movement. She finds inspiration for her dances in many eras,
places, and faces, from ancient cultures and spiritual myths worldwide,
to the work of silent film star and original vamp Theda Bara, and turn-of-the-century
dance goddess Ruth St. Denis. Tempest is the creator of the the Gothic
Belly Dance Resource, and is considered to be the premier instructor
for the genre. In the fall of 2006, she created and organized a groundbreaking
event "The Durga Tour" - a nationwide tour of over two dozen
states, bringing Gothic, Sacred, and Experimental belly dance performances
and workshops to each stop. She is featured on the first ever GBD performance
DVD produced by WorldDanceNewYork entitled "The Darker Side of
Fusion" and just released "Bellydance for Beautiful Freaks",
an instructional DVD, this past fall.
