Teacher: Heather Shoopman

Class Title: Holding Space, Moving Slow and Game Face

Description: Class will begin and end with a stretch and vocal warm up sequence to awaken and connect the body & mind. Drills will start off slow and decelerate to slow motion, with concentration on technical execution. Each drill will be worked through an emotional improv exercise to practice maintaining good facial expressions. We will focus on presence, connection and expansion of one’s energy during performance.

Instructor Bio: Born and bred in Oklahoma, Heather Shoopman began the movement journey early in cheer, dance team and country/western dancing.
Then came the 80‘s, aerobics and her first introduction to hip hop--MTV. Add to the mix tai chi, yoga and several bellydance styles, along with an extensive background in acting and theatrics and you get the strong, fluid, zany style that is uniquely ShOOp.
Her bellydance path started over a decade ago with Mesmera, who has an amazing, passionate gypsy flair, followed by the discovery of The Indigo and FatChanceBellyDance. She then saw Unmata, Suhaila, Frederique, Ariellah, Heather Stants (and many more) and began to appreciate the different personalities that come to fusion.          She immediately got to work in the dance lab, came up with some cool stuff, won a few awards, and created a troupe called Se7eN who put themselves on the map with a body image piece in Unmata’s Blood Moon Regale. This piece helped set in motion Bellyqueen of NYC’s touring show PURE Reflections: Beauty Reimagined, which explores body image and self love in today’s media driven society.
When she’s not immersed in a solo project, she can be seen collaborating with pals Calamity Sam, Sherri Wheatley and Michaella Manning...or playing DJ with her sister. She maintains her ATS chops in Heavy Metal, a troupe formed with Hannah Trimbath.
She is a proud co-founder of BFLA-Belly Fusion Los Angeles, a collaborative of LA based dancers focused on public awareness of Fusion Bellydance as an art form. She now lives in Los Angeles where she teaches and performs regularly, while traveling to cities all over the world to spread the delight and healing power of dance. Heather is a member of the unicorn family, and is happiest outside.

Instructor Bio: Since childhood, Alaska has been fascinated with Dance, Circus life, and the vast array of Performance Art.  “Every day is a new learning experience, and we are eternal students”, admits Alaska, a busy dancer and emerging Movement Artist, who loves to learn. Her fluid moves and innovative ideas paint the stage wherever she goes, often including eclectic inspiration—from Vaudevillian show-stoppers to Classical Ballet technique—into her unique performance.

When she is not learning new performance techniques, Alaska keeps outrageously busy teaching college science courses, working on late-night sewing and costuming missions, constructing hoops for community programs, crafting for her at-home-business, and working her other ten-million jobs! In 2008, Alaska founded the Roustabout Circus Collective. It has been Alaska’s longtime mission to push "Movement Arts" into a respected Performance Art arena that is appreciated by all. “Every movement we do has meaning and intention.” says Alaska, “Through movement and dance we can create a fascinating, non-permanent, fluid Art that words cannot describe and even the craftiest photographer cannot fully capture! You can’t take our ‘Art’ home and hang it on a wall; you carry its fleeting fire, whirling spirals, shimmering sparkles, and galloping feet in your heart with you always.”

Class Title: Expand Your Territory!

Description: Heather Stants and Urban Tribal Dance Company have pioneered the contemporary tribal fusion movement with their long lines and interpretive choreography. In this workshop Heather leads students through exercises, drills, movements and combinations that help dancers to expand their belly dance movement base, dance with the whole body and create larger, more expressive movement.

Instructor Bio: Heather Stants is a lifelong artist and dancer with a degree in photography and fine arts. Her career in tribal fusion dance began in the mid 1990's when she became the assistant director of Read My Hips (www.readmyhips.com) in Chicago, Illinois. In 1999 Heather moved to San Diego, California and launched the San Diego tribal dance movement through her classes and the formation of Urban Tribal Dance Company.

Heather's diverse movement and arts background, including teacher trainings in both Pilates and yoga, feeds her creativity and her groundbreaking approach to choreography. Urban Tribal Dance Company is known for its contemporary approach to belly dance, a pared down costume emphasizing body line over ornamentation, athleticism and the use of the dance form as a means of personal expression and interpretation. Their creativity has twice earned them the title of "Troupe of the Year" in Zaghareet! Magazine's Golden Belly Awards. In addition to teaching several weekly classes in San Diego since 1999, Heather Stants and Urban Tribal Dance Company tour extensively sharing their love of modern tribal fusion dance with dancers in the U.S. and abroad. Teacher: Colleena Shakti

Class Title: Nautch-Wali, North Indian Fusion Dance, a brand-new workshop being debuted at Tribal Fest!

Description: Nautch-walis (or tawaifs) were heavily adorned dance women of Northern India. From esteemed and highly trained court dancers to nomadic entertainers, these women captured the imagination of audiences for hundreds of years. The dance style in North India that has evolved into the present-day classical form- Kathak, flourished under Mughal rule (absorbing a strong Persian influences) and in the opulent courts of Rajasthan’s Maharajas (absorbing elements of Rajasthani folk dance). Nautch girls performed for the occupying British Raj and eventually made their way into early Bollywood films, until the stylistic tradition died out.

The subject is severely under-documented and remains a forgotten piece of Indian dance history, because of the dangerously vague distinction between prostitution and refined artistic entertainment.

Through research and also first-hand experience of dancing for Rajasthani Maharajas (Kings) and being a part of royal family events in the historical palaces over the last decade, Colleena has had the privilege to experience remnants of this great dance era. She has been greatly inspired by the movements, costuming and air of this dance, and worked it into her Indian Fusion style. She used this inspiration in choreographies and costuming on the currently touring duet show – ‘Lasya’, with Rachel Brice and Colleena.

The workshop will include lecture, dance technique and training exercises as well as richly layered dance phrases inspired by this forgotten dance style.

Dance techniques relating to this subject include Kathak, Rajasthani folk dances, Persian dance, as well as some belly dance and fusion movements. Spins are a major part of this vocabulary, so please come prepared to drill spins (wait to eat a big meal after the workshop, and a large skirt is recommended).

The lecture section of this course will cover: Indian aesthetic theory, historical context of dance in India, an overview of court life in North India, classical vs. folk dances, Nautch costuming and modern evolution of the Nautch girl.

Instructor Bio: Colleena Shakti is a dancer of great subtlety and depth. She has dedicated her life to dance ever since moving to India in 2001 to undergo intensive training in Odissi Classical Indian dance, as well as researching and documenting Rajasthani dances, music and jewelry traditions. Her commitment to honoring her dance lineages has given her a precious opportunity to reflect upon the layers of subtlety inside the dance and spiritual heritage of vedic temple dance traditions linked to Odissi.

Colleena lives most of the year in Rajasthan, India where she has founded Shakti School of Dance in a historical temple complex in the holy town of Pushkar, while in summer months she tours, performing and teaching worldwide. Annually, she presents the Pushkar Temple Dance Festival, a classical music and dance festival in the Old Rangji Temple at Pushkar.

Over the past decade, she has been living closely with a tribe of Kalbelia ‘Gypsies’ and has witnessed many stages of evolution within their nomadic culture. It took years for her to observe the details and accents of their dance form, because it is constantly evolving. She travels India performing at village fairs, in Rajasthan’s great palaces and at prestigious arts festivals with her Rajasthani Langa Musicians and ‘Gypsy’ dancers. In 2007 she was honored by the Vice President and current President of India (Pratiba Patil) for her work with Rajashtani folk arts after a performance with her musicians in Amravarti.

This spring she is proud to be presenting a duet collaboration work with Rachel Brice. Lasya is an artistic exploration into the ethics of fusion and includes a choreographed suite of dances and workshops that brings it back to a sweet feminine mood… (Lasya: Sanskrit;  fluid, feminine movement).

Colleena will also be showing her collection of silver antique and contemporary Indian silver jewelry during Tribal Fest at the Nakarali booth on the front lawn. Nakarali is the jewelry company Colleena and Carolena Nericcio have created to share the beauty and appreciation of tribal silver across the world. For a sneak peek, visit their website: www.nakarali.com  For more information about Colleena: www.colleenashakti.com

Teacher: Deb Rubin

Class Title: Cultivating The Ultimate Slink Factor: part 1:

Description:
This is not your typical slow/slinky workshop.
In this special TF12 edition, we will go way beyond the usual slow/slinky, bringing it all to the next level. Learn how to unlock the body in new ways, access deeper articulation of movement, and cultivate much richer, goo-ier movement quality for maximum 'wow' factor on stage and deeper embodiment of your dance. The yoga warm-up of this workshop will pull from Deb’s unique Dance Therapeutics Material for the Upper Body to unlock the ribcage, upper spine, shoulder girdle and side body, and radically improve posture, upper body carriage, fluid arm work, and movement ability in the traditional 'stuck' upper spine for maximum expression of movement. Core-integrated muscularity and torso isolation control will be highlighted. We will then play with dynamics and suspension in movements, timing, seamless transitions to achieve the ultimate 'wow' factor in performance. She has often been coined the ‘Queen of Slink”. Come learn Deb’s unique tribal stylization and core-integrated slink secrets. New combos introduced!

Instructor Bio: At the root of it all, Deb Rubin just really, really likes to dance, and will forever consider herself a student on this path. She is extremely grateful to her teachers and inspirations, who have paved the way, encouraged her growth, and helped awaken a sense of possibility, artistry, tribe, personal power, and potential in both her dancing and her life. At the end of the day, that is what she holds most dear about this journey. Deb is very honored to be teaching again at Tribal Fest 12, to have the opportunity to gather with other dancers in our global tribe and share her passion, depth, experiences, and inquiry of this evolving art form from her unique, somatic perspective.

One of the internationally-acclaimed tribal fusion belly dance artists coming out of the San Francisco Bay Area, Deb is honored to have shared the stage as a guest artist with some of her biggest musical and dance inspirations: Balkan Beat Box, Beats Antique, Brass Menagerie Balkan Brass Band, EOTO, Lynx&Janover, David Starfire, Vibesquad, Zilla, Fishtank Ensemble, Hamsa Lila, and Urban Tribal Dance Co.  She plays with the juxtaposition of ancient and modern, vintage and contemporary, and how to create a tension of opposites in her dancing. Currently, Deb teaches and performs around the globe, sharing her unique stylization and yogic perspective of the dance.

Her solid foundation of Tribal Fusion was seeded through her 5 years as a member and collaborating choreographer with Ultra Gypsy Belly Dance Theater, and as a regular sub for Jill Parker's classes (until 2007), who is known as the Mama of Modern Tribal Fusion. Deb is extremely influenced by her long-time teacher and major inspiration on this path, Rachel Brice, with whom she began studying in 2003, was honored to assist at Tribal Massive, 2008, and with whom she continues to study. Deb’s dance is also heavily influenced by her long-term, extensive studies with Mardi Love, Zoe Jakes, Heather Stants, Suhaila Salimpour, and her continued learnings from Cera Byer, Aubre Hill, Kami Liddle, Mira Betz, Amy Sigil, Carolena Nericcio, and Jamila Salimpour.

A holistic health counselor, somatic educator, yoga teacher, and integrative bodyworker, Deb is also the founder of SattyaBody Women's Health. She teaches workshops and retreats around the globe fusing women's health and empowerment with yoga, tribal fusion belly dance, nature/sustainability, and creative expression. She is also the creatrix of SF Mecca Immersion, the world's premiere retreat intensive into the heart and soul of San Francisco Tribal. (www.sfmeccaimmersion.com)

As a massage therapist and Yoga teacher for the past 12 years, Deb specializes in injury rehab for dancers and women's health. She is greatly influenced by her studies of Traditional Thai Yoga Massage in the hill tribes of Northern Thailand under the lineage of Asokananada, her vision quest experiences in the Northern California desert, and her Yoga teacher trainings with Integrative Yoga Therapy and AcroYoga, and Yoga studies with Darshana Weil, Shiva Rae, and Gary Kraftsow. She is currently working on an upcoming DVD of her dance therapeutics material.

Deb has a BA in pre-med and psychology from Princeton University, and an MA in Holistic Health Education from JFK University, with an emphasis on Mind-Body Medicine and Somatic Psychology. You can find her writings published in Yoga Journal Magazine and in FUSE magazine. Currently, Deb is continuing her Yoga studies in the Viniyoga tradition with Gary Kraftsow, Mirka Kraftsow, and Rachel Brice, immersing in her belly dance studies with Rachel Brice, Suhaila Salimpour, Kami Liddle, and continuing to study modern, ballet, contact improvization, and tango in the vibrant community of San Francisco.  Deb was featured in FUSE magazine's Winter 2011 edition as "The Best Kept Secret in Tribal."  For more on Deb, please visit: www.sattyabody.com

Teacher: Lisa Hyde

Class Title: Fusion Zills and Belly Dance Drills

Description: This two hour workshop focuses on the art of zilling and the exciting possibilities of applying a variety of rhythms to fusion music and choreography.

After warming up, Lisa will break down the 3, 5, and 7 patterns and drill the hell out of ‘em with layers of isolations. The second half of the workshop focuses on more complicated patterns added to short combos and moving across the floor. This workshop promises to challenge both beginners and zill enthusiasts!

Instructor Bio: As a young girl, Lisa Hyde found a National Geographic magazine article written by the only Western woman to become Geisha. The exquisite diligence and beauty of shaping a being into a living work of art resonated powerfully in her heart, so she tucked it away carefully in her dreams.
Lisa’s journey through life has been rich with dance and movement studies. Everything from ballet to kick boxing but it is belly dance that has proven to be her perfect medium for elevating the art of being a woman with pure dedication to the performance arts. The extraordinary journey of training, passion, and growth is the path that had been waiting for her all along.
Lisa began her belly dance training with the incomparable Mesmera who instilled in her a love of rhythm and zilling. She has studied under the best zill players that the Bay Area has to offer and brings her own unique voice to this rich lineage. Teachers: Hipnotic

Class Title: Floored! - A Turkish Drop Workshop

Description: The Turkish Drop: You know it. You love it. You want to know how to do it. And Hipnotic really wants to teach you! Our specially crafted Turkish Drop workshop focuses specifically on the safe and singular execution of a Turkish Drop. And Hipnotic does them so well, they do them together!! Hipnotic is known for their ups and downs, but are ‘almost’ famous for their Double Turkish Drop which they created and have performed since 2005.

Let’s be honest, while gravity helps a LOT when executing the Turkish Drop, a performer needs to execute this move with physical care and control to avoid embarrassing and awkward moments, injury or worse (knocking oneself unconscious)! The Turkish Drop requires a combination of strength and flexibility and is physically demanding. Led by ACE Certified Personal Trainer and Hipnotic Co-Director, Mary Smollack, and Hipnotic Co-Director, Jatare Barrett, this workshop focuses on the physical requirements of performing a safe (and hopefully silent) Turkish Drop.

Participants will be guided through a series of strengthening and flexibility exercises chosen specifically to facilitate proper form and execution of the Turkish Drop. Each participant will be given an illustrated list of the workshop exercises which can easily be done at home as well. It is appropriate for all levels of students, from those that have not yet tried a drop, but would like to learn how to do it safely, to those that have been performing it, but may want to learn more about conditioning for it. Hipnotic’s intention is to give guidance to everyone in attendance. There is no guarantee that each participant will be able to successfully execute a Turkish Drop safely (solo) at the end of the workshop.

Instructor Bio: Hipnotic has been performing around the Chicagoland area since 2002 and in 2006 became the dynamic duo that is known for the "double Turkish drop". With varied influences from Hip Hop, Ballet, Akido and more, Hipnotic strives to blend their artistic differences to create memorable belly dance performances. Ever present in their community, Hipnotic members are co-creators of Midwest Tribal Mafia event which endeavors to promote local Midwest teachers and performers. Teacher: Asharah

Class Title: The Salimpour Legacy in Tribal Style Belly Dance

Description: With its rich costuming, sense of camaraderie, and common dance vocabulary, tribal style belly dance (including American Tribal Style, Improvisational Tribal Style, Synchronized Group Improvisation, and Tribal Fusion) has grown into a international phenomenon. But where did it come from, and why do we dance the way we do? In order to find the answer we must look back to Jamila Salimpour and the Salimpour dance legacy. In this workshop, Asharah will discuss just how important Jamila Salimpour–the first American dancer to name belly dance steps in a standard format, the creator of the first "tribal-style" dance troupe Bal Anat, and mother of Suhaila Salimpour–is to tribal style belly dance and how her format evolved and changed to become American Tribal Style (ATS) and the many wonderful flavors of tribal fusion bellydance that we know and love today. Asharah will then lead participants through some core movements of the Jamila Salimpour format and explain how these movements evolved, and how they are similar to and differ from the familiar group improvisational steps we use in ATS and Improvisational Tribal Style bellydance. Lots of handouts will be provided, and we will dance!

Instructor Bio: Asharah is internationally renowned for her strong technique, dramatic fusion of tribal and cabaret belly dance, and concise teaching style. She has taught sold-out workshops throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe; her 2008 instructional DVD, Modern Tribal Bellydance with Asharah, has received rave reviews from dancers of all levels all around the world. She holds a B.A. from Princeton University in Near Eastern Studies, a Level 2 certification in the Suhaila Salimpour belly dance format, and a Level 1 certification in the Jamila Salimpour belly dance format. After living on the East Coast for 12 years, she has returned to her home state of California, and now resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a student of Middle Eastern history, she believes that every belly dancer must know the history and culture of this dance, whether she is performing it in its traditional forms or fusing it with others. Read her blog on dance, art, integrity, and business at www.bdpaladin.com, and learn more about her upcoming events at www.asharah.com

Teacher: Cera Byer

Class Title: Western Technique for an Eastern Dance

Description: Technique doesn't just stop at pops and locks. If you have your eye on fusing bellydance with western dance forms, you might need to know a tendu from a degage, or how to layer grand plie with alternating rib circles, or maybe a pique turn to go with your arabesque.

In this two-day class we will explore and drill the basics of jazz and ballet technique with bellydance layering to help you find limitless lines and endless traveling potential. Posture, alignment, traveling, level changes, leaving the floor and finding the floor, will all be covered in this expansive course. Find some lines to go with your locks!

Instructor Bio: Cera Byer (Damage Control Dance Theater / Shoebox Studio) holds a degree in Dance from San Francisco State University and has taught in high schools, studios, workshops, and retreats around the US and abroad. Her technical approach comes from continuing exploration into Graham, Horton, and Dunham techniques, alongside Kathak, Persian, Bellydance, Hip Hop, Funk, and Afro-Caribbean traditions, but her choreography is anything but a dry academic approach to fusion. Cera's work has been called "a hot sweaty tribute that will have audiences and dancers alike moving and moved by the material", and "organic evolving studies into the biospheres of human emotion". Cera owns and operates Shoebox Studio in San Francisco and is the founder and director of Damage Control Dance Theater.

Devi has also been invited to be part of major government funded projects such as "The Firebird", "Unmasked" and produced Ghawazi Caravan's unique production, "Intertwine".         Devi is renowned throughout Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Europe for her creative, thorough and approachable teaching style and her beautiful, commanding stage presence. Teacher: Tempest

Class Title: Essence of the Dance: From the Inside Out

Description: Truly making the dance your own, creating your own voice and personal style, comes not just from the movements you do, but how you translate them through your body and the energy you use to engage the audience with. If you're looking to find your own voice in the dance and strive to be uniquely YOU, this workshop will actively engage your body and mind, and give you the tools in order to make it possible, within the framework of bellydance. We will explore daily exercises to enhance your dance connectivity, personalize your core movements, and add intensity and power to your armwork, footwork, and core while deepening control of your entire being. From exploring "simple" elegance to adding more complexity and contrast, get more satisfaction out of both your practice time and your performances! Suitable for all styles of bellydance. Warning: May involve live music.

Instructor Bio: Based in Providence, Rhode Island, Tempest pulls from her visual arts background, literary tendencies, and global inspirations to create dance that crosses the boundaries of time and culture. She is the premiere instructor of both Gothic & Steampunk Bellydance in North America, and her extensive work in these genres has helped to define and develop the movements across the world. Her compellingly artful performances exemplify her distinctively theatrical, unique, and expressive style, and are rooted in oriental dance technique with a transcendent approach. Her costume designs have revolutionized the look of modern bellydance, and continue to inspire new and old generations of dancers alike.

Tempest has studied extensively many forms of traditional bellydance - from Turkish Oriental, Romani, Classic & Modern Egyptian, American Cabaret, Folkloric & Trance dances of North Africa and the Mediterranean. Tempest regularly studies with masters of the dance, particularly focusing her study on traditional and folkloric forms of the dance - as she feels that the best fusion comes as close to the source as possible. In particular, Amel Tafsout, Artemis Mourat, Amel Tafsout, Dalia Carella, and Lee Ali are treasured teachers and inspirations. In 2011, she created Tapestry Dance Retreat, and in 2012 she is producing Waking Persephone: Dancing Through the Dark & Unusual - both events rooted in Providence, RI. She also leads Museum Quality: Art School for Bellydancers intensives all over the world.

She finds inspiration for her dances in many eras, places, and faces, from ancient cultures and spiritual myths worldwide, to the work of silent film star and original vamp Theda Bara, and turn-of-the-century dance goddess Ruth St. Denis. She is particularly well-known for her Nouveau Noir Dance performances - which transport the audience back in time to the early 20th Century as well as the fantasy realms of Steampunk and Retro-Futurism, and sacred-fusion, ritualistic forms of belly dance. Her devotion to art, creativity and innovation in dance marks her as a stand-out, must-see performer who continues to evolve and set the bar for others in the Fusion Bellydance genres, while her passionate and in-depth instruction pushes dancers of all levels to find their own voices through the dance.

Description: Living in Hawaii I am always inspired by nature. Class Title: Temptation Rag

Description: Written in 1909 by Henry Lodge, the Temptation Rag has been puttin’ pep in the step for nearly a century. This choreography celebrates one of my favorite renditions of this number. More than just throwing a dance at you, we'll discuss facial expression, nuance, and sinking into the personality of the piece.

Instructor Bio: Mardi Love has been around for some years now, influential in shaping the aesthetic of Tribal Fusion as it is known today. Mardi began dancing with The One and Only Heather Stants, director of the innovative Urban Tribal Dance Company, then partnered up with the illustrious Rachel Brice and later the notorious Zoe Jakes to enjoy a good run with The Indigo, touring extensively and producing their own damn show. Class Title: All About Abs: Control, Combos and Choreography

Description: This workshop will focus on combinations, featuring the abdominal region, while maintaining comfortable facial expressions and dancer-audience interaction. Class will begin with a warm-up and various conditioning exercises to help develop muscle memory for strong, precise abdominal work.

Following the warm-up, we will focus on the mechanics and visualization exercises for belly rolls, crisp and isolated abdominal contractions, belly pops, and the infamous flutter. We will also explore variations on the belly roll, as well as dynamics in abdominal work. Next, the movements discussed in class will be composed into several combinations.

Last but not least, you will learn a sassy choreography based upon the class material featuring Michelle’s signature pin-up stylization.

Instructor Bio: Michelle Manx’s love for dance started at the age of six when she began participation in ballet and tap classes. She became interested in bellydance when her mother enrolled in a bellydance class in the 70’s and with her background in anthropology, the study of ethnic dance was a natural progression.
Michelle has studied the art of bellydance since early 2002, including Suhaila Salimpour technique (currently working towards her Level 2 Certification), Jamila Salimpour Format (Level 2 certified), various forms of Tribal Bellydance, and Raqs Sharqi. She has also supplemented her knowledge of dance and movement by taking Bharata Natyam, classic burlesque, and yoga classes.
She also enjoys performing at tattoo conventions, where she developed her signature style of incorporating the sense of style, poses, and facial expressions of the pin-up girls of the 40’s and 50’s into her dancing. In 2008, Michelle's life was changed when had the honor of debuting her ’Pin-up Bellydance’ workshop at Tribal Fest 8. Since then, she has traveled to teach her unique stylization of bellydance at festivals and seminars associated with Tribal and alternative bellydance. In addition, she accepted the position of the producer of Tribal Dance Camp in Texas in association with Bahaia and HOT Seminars.
Whenever Michelle’s not bellydancing or producing bellydance events, she enjoys participating in pin-up photography photo shoots.
