Alaska’s Bio:
Since
childhood, Alaska has been fascinated
with Dance, Circus life, and the vast array of Performance Art. “Every
day is a new learning experience, and we are eternal students”,
admits Alaska,
a busy dancer and emerging Movement Artist, who loves to learn.
Her fluid moves and innovative ideas paint the stage wherever she
goes, often including eclectic inspiration—from Vaudevillian show-stoppers
to Classical Ballet technique—into her unique performance.
She
is the pioneer of a new arena of Hoop Dance—Hooping Improvisational
Tribal Style (HITS), which fuses and incorporates aspects of Improvisational
Tribal Style (ITS) Belly Dance and Hula Hooping to create a fresh,
fun, and energizing menagerie of live group performance art! Alaska
has since has since collaborated with many hoopers and dancers
to perfect, fine-tune, modify, and build movements. Bonnie Claire, Rachel
Hessheimer, Flo (Flozilla)
Bargar, and Alaska make up
the Ritzy Rouge Hoop Troupe, who specializes in the fine art of
HITS. The Ritzy Rouge can be spotted dancing to live music and DJs,
practicing intensely on a hot summer's day, or twirling and clowning
about at a community event near you!
Alaska is a very active member of the Performance and Art
community in Albuquerque,
New Mexico where she lives full time! She assists
with a weekly Hoop-Down (www.DukeCityFix.com/groupsAlbuquerque
Hoopers) and assorted community outreach programs. When she is not
learning new performance techniques, Alaska keeps outrageously busy
teaching college science courses, working on late-night sewing and
costuming missions, constructing hoops for community
programs, crafting for her at-home-business, and working her other
ten-million jobs! In 2008, Alaska founded the Roustabout
Circus Collective. It has been Alaska’s longtime mission to push "Movement
Arts" into a respected Performance Art arena that is appreciated
by all. “Every movement we do has meaning and intention,”
says Alaska,
“Through movement and dance we can create a fascinating, non-permanent,
fluid Art that words cannot describe and even the craftiest photographer
cannot fully capture! You can’t take our ‘Art’ home and hang it
on a wall; you carry its fleeting fire, whirling spirals, shimmering
sparkles, and galloping feet in your heart with you always.”

Teacher: Colleena Shakti
Class Title: Indian Fusion
Belly Dance
Description: Colleena
will lead students through movements from both classical and folk
dances of Rajasthan (North India),
exploring techniques and climaxing with a short fusion choreography.
In
this workshop, a peek at Rajasthani rhythms and movements will invite
dancers into the colorful world of Indian dance. The threads that
link Rajasthani dances and belly dance are carefully woven together
in this choreography, offering an example of how tasteful fusion
comes together with ease.
Rajasthani dance has many movements that
one might describe as trance inducing, such as the various spins
and the repetitive footwork. Rajasthani
classical dance (Kathak) also offers many types of spins, as well
as elegant lines created in the body…
and of course mudras and focused expression (Abhinaya).
Theory is always an important base Colleena
establishes in her workshops…
She offers depth and intention to each
movement that is passed on. The
goal is to uphold the essence of her dance lineages in Indian dance,
as well as developing integrity in the movements she has translated
into a fusion vocabulary of her own design.
With clear intentions, communication happens through our
art…
Skill Level:
Open, some dance experience
helpful
What to
Bring:
Please come to this class with a large skirt, water, a notebook…
and please do not eat just before class… we will be spinning!
What to
Wear: Bring
or wear a large skirt
Colleena‘s Bio:
Colleena has devoted her life completely to dance upon arriving in
India in 2001 when she meet her Odissi Guru, Padma Cheran Dehury
and settled in at Bhubaneswar, Orissa- the capital of Odissi dance.
The task of training in Indian classical dance in a very traditional
manner is not an easy thing. Just as the life of a Yogi must be
disciplined and strict, so is the careful transformation into an
Odissi dancer. In Odissi sacred dance Colleena has found deep connection
to the Divine through the art of dance. Her work in all dance forms
centers around this principle in her life as a devotee. Her Odissi
Guru has constantly been the driving force and flow of inspiration
that allowed her to see the possibilities of a ‘dance life’ and
do the work to manifest it under his guidance.
It was a long awaited dream for Colleena to come to Rajasthan and
saturate herself in its rich artistic culture. Upon arrival in Rajasthan
in early 2002, Colleena meet a tribe of Khalbelia ‘Gypsies’ who
agreed to let her research their dance. Immediately attracted to
their wild ways and natural manner of functioning in a tribal society,
she began a friendship which has grown to be an important part of
her life. Khalbelia people are some of the last semi nomadic tribal
people on the planet, and have remained that way by developing dramatic
personalities, clever wit and an extremely loyal nature. Thus, it
was a long process which took years to finally know the truths which
lay behind the stories of these people. Today, Colleena feels most
at home in the ‘Gypsy’ camp, sharing much of her time in Rajasthan
with this tribe of Khalbelia and performs with them throughout India. She gives credit to them for
revealing so many insights in Rajasthani culture and communal thinking.
She has taken many years to research and study dance in various
corners of Rajasthan with both famed teachers and with local villagers
to gain a well rounded understanding of the rhythms and movements
of Rajasthan.
Colleena was the first outsider to go so deeply into the Khalbelia
culture to find the origins and symbolism in their dance and lifestyle.
Pioneering a way to convey this tribal dance, Colleena drew from
her experiences in daily life with the Khalbelia as well as techniques
from other Indian folk and classical dances to create a vocabulary
that is easy to share with those who are not born into the dance
tradition. Countless students from around the world have taken her
workshops in various styles of dance to experience her thorough
manner of teaching both the movements and cultural context from
which they come.
In 2004, with great love and support of local people, Colleena founded
Shakti School of Dance within a historical Vishnu temple in the
holy town of Pushkar, Rajasthan. She has
invited her Odissi Guru, Padma Cheran Dehury to come and teach Odissi
and classical music during the school season (November- April).
Their school offers intensive training as well as drop in classes
in Odissi classical dance, special workshops in Belly Dance and
various Rajasthani folk dances. Colleena’s dream of creating a sacred
dance space for all dance forms has included having her Khalbleia
‘Gypsy’ sisters teach classes in their dance style, which offers
them a chance to feel respected for their art form and make a fair
wage.
It has been a great reward for her to be welcomed with open arms
by fellow artists and audiences in India.
Newspapers and television reviews rave about her delicate mastery
of Rajasthani style and her use of Abinaya in both folk dances and
Odissi classical dance. Colleena has had the honor of having her
dances showcased in India at such prestigious stages as: Jaipur Virasat
Festival, Jagmandir Lake Palace,
Udaipur
City Palace,
Mewar Festival, as well as countless private events and television
appearances. In 2007 Colleena and her Rajasthani musicians were
asked to perform for the Presidant of India (former Governer of
Rajasthan) as a presentation of Rajasthani culture. She was honored
for her dedicated work in preserving Rajasthan’s rich heritage and
artistic traditions.
Since 2007, Colleena and Shakti School of Dance annually present
The Pushkar Temple Dance Festival; a full length Odissi Classical
music and dance concert in the Old
Rangji Temple.
The concert highlights both abinaya (dramatic storytelling dance)
and nritta (purely dance) pieces with both international and Indian
students; accompanied by top level classical musicians. The
Temple Dance Festival aims to highlight the sweetness of devotional
dance and music in the holy town of Pushkar, one of India’s sacred cities.
Colleena is
a woman with a clear vision and strong beliefs. Her work with traditional
dance focuses on understanding both the movements and cultural context
equally, so that the essence of the dance remains vibrant. This
principle is important in her work of creating a fusion Belly Dance,
so that the different personalities and histories of the movements
are honored within the vocabulary and the quality remains rich.
Colleena’s system of dance begins with a foundation of yogic philosophy;
which unlock many keys to having clear focus and strong movements
in dance, as well as the methods in movement and sacred intention
of Odissi dance.
Currently Colleena divides her time between her home in Pushkar,
Rajasthan (India) where she directs Shakti School of Dance (annually
presenting ‘The Pushkar Temple Dance Festival’) and continuing in
her rigorous training under her Odissi Guru, while in summer months
she tours internationally teaching and performing dance.
Colleena maintains a love and respect
for the dance form which initially inspired her - Belly Dance. She
acknowledges the influences of some of the great dancers who developed
what we call Tribal Belly Dance and it's many facets. Recently
Colleena and Carolena Nericcio have teamed up to share their love
of tribal cultures that inspire our dance vocabulary. They
have launched Nakarali - an exquisite collection house and producer
of Indian tribal silver jewelry: www.Nakarali.com The
project involves much more than simple jewelry... come and see the
vision!

Tempest's Bio: Based in Providence, Rhode Island, Tempest pulls
from her visual arts background, literary tendencies, and global
inspirations to create dance that crosses the boundaries of time
and culture. Tempest began her journey into dance in 2000, and has
traveled the country to study traditional, folkloric, and fusion
forms of bellydance. She is the premiere instructor of Gothic Bellydance
in North America, and her extensive work in the genre has helped
to define and develop the movement across the world. Her compelling
performances exemplify her distinctively theatrical and expressive
style, and are rooted in oriental dance technique with a transcendent
approach. Her costume designs have revolutionized the look of modern
bellydance, and continue to inspire new and old generations of dancers
alike.
As of 2010, Tempest has taught over 150 workshops on Gothic Bellydance
and Ritual/Sacred Dance across the nation and in Europe and Asia,
and actively travels each month teaching and performing. She has
organized three nationwide tours (The Durga Tour in 2006 and 2009,
and Movin'Th'Mischief Tour in 2007). She was the co-producer of
the largest festival devoted Gothic Bellydance in North America
- Gothla US from 2008-2010, and is the founder and primary author
of The Gothic Bellydance
Resource, which tracks the progress of the movement as it develops
worldwide. Her current projects includes Tapestry
- A Dance Retreat Experience in Fall 2011, and her travel-anywhere
intensive "Museum
Quality: Art School for Bellydancers."
Tempest has
studied extensively many forms of traditional bellydance - from
Turkish Oriental, Romani, Classic & Modern Egyptian, American
Cabaret, Folkloric & Trance dances of North Africa and the Mediterranean.
Tempest regularly studies with masters of the dance, particularly
focusing her study on traditional and folkloric forms of the dance
- as she feels that the best fusion comes as close to the source
as possible. In particular, Dalia Carella, Artemis Mourat, Amel
Tafsout, and Lee Ali are treasured teachers and inspirations. While
many others in the Gothic genre work and teach from a Tribal/Tribal
fusion base, she distinctly blends the Gothic culture with the more
traditional & folkloric forms of bellydance, earning her style
the appropros description of "Gothic Oriental."
She finds inspiration
for her dances in many eras, places, and faces, from ancient cultures
and spiritual myths worldwide, to the work of silent film star and
original vamp Theda Bara, and turn-of-the-century dance goddess
Ruth St. Denis. She is particularly well-known for her Nouveau Noir
Dance performances - which transport the audience back in time to
the early 20th Century as well as the fantasy realms of Steampunk
and Retro-Futurism, and sacred-fusion, ritualistic forms of belly
dance. Her devotion to art, creativity and innovation in dance marks
her as a stand-out, must-see performer who continues to evolve and
set the bar for others in the Gothic & Fusion Bellydance genres.
In addition
to being a world-renowned dancer and instructor, Tempest is a professionally
trained visual artist, receiving her BF in Printmaking from the
Rhode Island School of Design. Her artwork has received awards and
honors worldwide. She is also very well-known for her unique costuming
designs, including the original "corset belt" design,
the "skorset", the "corset bra" and other designs.
Her work can be found on dancers and other design aficionado across
the world, from individuals to whole troupes and dance companies

Teacher: Asharah
Class Title: A Crash Course in Middle Eastern History
Description: As tribal and fusion belly dance expands internationally, we are
increasingly losing sight of the roots of our dance form in the
Middle East. Even if we never perform belly dance in its
more traditional forms, such as oriental or folkloric, it is imperative
that we have knowledge of the culture from which the dance came.
Abigail Keyes, aka Asharah, whose academic focus has been the culture
and politics of the Middle East, will introduce students to essential
elements of understanding Middle Eastern culture, arts, religion,
and politics, as well as give a brief explanation of the expansion
of Islam and the political histories of the region and how these
elements affect us as belly dancers.
Skill Level: Open
What to Bring: A notebook may come in handy - for $5, a large handout can purchased
in class from Asharah.
What to Wear: Comfy dance clothes
Asharah‘s Bio:
“Being
true to your self isn’t easy. It’s perhaps the hardest thing an
artist can do. But the rewards are worth the struggle. I have sought
to remain true to my convictions, to never compromise my art to
make myself more appealing or popular, to continue to grow and learn
and seek knowledge from my mentors and colleagues both in and out
of the dance world, and to be an example for dancers who are seeking
their own artistic path.” - From Asharah’s “A Statement of
Purpose”, Spring 2009.
Asharah
is internationally renowned for her strong technique and dramatic
fusion of tribal and cabaret bellydance, and she has extensive experience
in Turkish, Egyptian, and American bellydance.
She
graduated from Princeton University
with a B.A. in Near Eastern Studies and is working towards earning
her Level 3 certification in the Suhaila Salimpour belly dance format,
and in spring of 2010 she will be relocated to Columbia,
South Carolina, to
join Delirium Tribal Belly Dance and Columbia Alternacirque.
In early
2008 she released her first instructional DVD, Modern Tribal Bellydance
with Asharah, which has received rave reviews from dancers around
the world. As a student of Middle Eastern history, she believes
that every belly dancer must know the history and culture of this
dance, whether she is performing it in its traditional forms or
fusing it with others. Read her blog on dance, art, integrity,
and business at www.bdpaladin.com,
and learn more about her upcoming events at www.ashara h.com.

a bellydance class in the 70’s and with her background in anthropology,
the study of ethnic dance was a natural progression.
Michelle has studied the art of bellydance since early 2002, including
Suhaila Salimpour technique (currently working towards her Level
II Certification), Jamila Salimpour Format (Level II certified),
various forms of Tribal Bellydance, and Raqs Sharqi. She has also
supplemented her knowledge of dance and movement by taking Bharata
Natyam, classic burlesque, and yoga classes.
She also enjoys performing at tattoo conventions, where she developed
her signature style of incorporating the sense of style, poses,
and facial expressions of the pin-up girls of the 40’s and 50’s
into her dancing. In 2008, Michelle's life was changed when had
the honor of debuting her 'Pin-up Bellydance' workshop at Tribal

Class Title: Musicality & Motion
Description: Ever wonder what gives a dancer that special something
else that makes them absolutely mesmerizing on stage? What makes
the dance more than a series of precise moves in pretty costume?
Do you know the secret to amazing stage presence and making the
dance truly your own?
Essentially, the dancer is the music made manifest. When a dancers
movements truly evoke visually for the audience the sound and feel
of the music, something amazing has been achieved. In this workshop
we will open our ears in order to see the music, identify it, translate
it to our bodies from head to toe, and apply emotional content effectively
and with sincerity. We will make the connection beyond emoting and
movement technique, where the expression is genuine and real for
the audience. There will be an emphasis on applying Middle Eastern
flair and musical interpretation to our dance vocabulary to keep
our dance firmly rooted in bellydance, while exploring fusion concepts.
Further more, students will come away with a more in-depth understanding
of how to put a dance together that is cohesive and flows, whether
you're doing choreography or improvisation. This workshop is for
all styles of bellydancers.
Skill Level: understanding of general bellydance vocabulary,
& especially geared to those who are performing or considering
performing.
What to Bring: Water and a willingness to push your perception
of yourself
What to Wear: Comfortable dance attire, preferably pants.
Tempest‘s Bio:
Based in Providence, Rhode Island, Tempest pulls from her visual
arts background, literary tendencies, and global inspirations to
create dance that crosses the boundaries of time and culture. Tempest
began her journey into dance in 2000, and has traveled the country
to study traditional, folkloric, and fusion forms of bellydance.
She is the premiere instructor of Gothic Bellydance in North America,
and her extensive work in the genre has helped to define and develop
the movement across the world. Her compelling performances exemplify
her distinctively theatrical and expressive style, and are rooted
in oriental dance technique with a transcendent approach. Her costume
designs have revolutionized the look of modern bellydance, and continue
to inspire new and old generations of dancers alike.
(including Ultra Gypsy, Urban Tribal, Frederique, Atash Maya, Asharah,
Dalia Carella, Suhaila Salimpour, and many more).

Class Title:
Mastering Your Mix - A music mixing workshop for dancers, by DJ
Amar
Description:
Learn how to make an impressive sounding mix for your next performance
using industry standard state of the art software that you can download
free.
If you find yourself envious of certain dancers who blow the audience
away with both their style and their music mixes, this workshop
is for
you.
With a few simple steps you can adjust bass, midrange and treble
frequencies; cross-fade one track into the next or edit a track
down
to just the portions you need; adjust the volume on one song if
it is noticeably lower or higher than another; add layers using
beats and ambient melodies from other songs.
Do you love a song and want to use it, but it is just too long?
Is there a portion of a song you want to use, but don't know how
to edit it smoothly?
Have you performed at a gig and given the "DJ" your CD
with 2 or more tracks on it, and the wrong track gets played? or
your set gets cut short? Would you like to control exactly when
your next track starts?
Would you like to be able to mix a continuous set with smooth transitions
rather than stop the momentum and wait for the next song to begin?
With my laptop and a projector, I will give an overview of key features
and shortcuts to get yourself started, show you how to edit a track,
use the fade in and out feature, add a second track, and then I
will make a mix using 3 songs with one piece of music overlayed
on another.
Software used: AUDACITY I mix my sets using Audacity, free software
which is compatible with
Windows and Mac. I will be teaching using this software. You can
also use Garage Band on your mac, which works fairly similarly,
with minor differences.
Level: This is an introductory course that will go over the basics
of using the software and using the important tools relevent to
mixing your set for stage performance. If you are already mixing
your sets like a pro, you don't need to take this workshop. If you
are semi familiar with mixing using software, and could use pointers
on key features and shortcuts that can turn 2 hours work into 45
minutes, then this workshop could benefit you.
Skill Level: Open to All
What to Bring: A notebook and an inquiring mind
What to Wear: Comfy clothes

Teacher: Patricia Passo
Class Title: Kalbelia and Flamenco
Description:
Learn
a fusion choreography! This composition is based on the influence
that the “Gypsies” (Domani) of Rajathan realized on Flamenco. We’ll
study the common points between both dances and the different techniques,
and how such different countries’ dances can fuse together.
(NOTE: Patricia is teaching two other Flamenco-based classes on Wednesday.
Please check Wednesday’s info if interested.)
Skill Level: Open, some dance experience helpful
What to Bring: Water
What to Wear: Dance class wear, skirts OK
Patricia‘s Bio:
Patricia Passo, creator of the Oriental Fusion method, is a graduate in
Scenic Arts from Rio
de Janeiro University.
She received her diploma in dance at the ‘Escuela de Danza Contemporánea
“Espaço Novo Ángel Vianna”’ where she specialised in Choreographic
Creation. She holds a Master’s degree in Theory and Practice of
Learning Dance from the Complutense University of Madrid and a Master’s
degree in Scenic Arts from the King Juan
Carlos University.
She is currently preparing her Doctor’s thesis based on research
into ethnic movements and their application to her didactic method.
She was brought in touch with Oriental dance through the school of Regina Ferrari
in Rio de Janeiro.
Once she settled in Spain,
she started to study under Shokry Mohamed. Her passion for popular
dance, the dance lived in the streets and which conserves its ancestral
essence took her on visits to numerous countries in the Near
East, where she got to know the people, their gesticular
richness and their expressive dances.
Her interest in field research made for her to live in India for three months a year. There,
she has been studying classical Indian Odissi dance under her teacher
Padam S. Cheer in the school
of Colleena Shakti,
since 2003. During her stays in India
she studied the Roma dances of Rajastan, living among them and performing
with the Kabelia tribe in the desert
of Thaar. The
contact with the Roma people of this region made for her
to further study Roma dance, travelling to Eastern European countries.
Since 2000, she has been taking Flamenco classes at the renowned
Madrid
school ‘Amor de Dios’.
From her investigations into ethnic dance, and at the foundation of the
creation of a fused and innovative language which seeks to coherently
integrate several concepts of oriental dance, a necessity was born
to give an analytical view of movement, which would allow them to
be systematically integrated by the academic world. This manner
of teaching and interpreting dance, has enabled the creation of
a style which is studied in the Patricia Passo dance centres, in
the academic world and in other collaborating centers. Thanks to
this systemization, it is possible to offer the oriental dance the
benefit of an analytic vision of its movements.
Parallel to the didactic efforts of the school, Oriental Fusion dance is
performed by the dance group that Patricia Passo choreographs.
Always connected to the academic world, she started her career when she
joined the Gama Filho University of Rio de Janeiro as Dance Coordinator.
Since 2001, she has been teaching at Carlos
III University
in Madrid
as Oriental Dance teacher. She also teaches a Choreographic Composition
course at the Instituto Superior de Danza Alicia Alonso, accredited
by the Rey Juan Carlos University
in Madrid.
She has created and teaches the first Academic Diploma in Oriental Dance
in Europe, accredited by Fusion Art and the Rey
Juan Carlos
University in Madrid.

Teacher: Lee Ali
Class Title: Exploring Djinn
Description: Whether we are dancing in the light or dancing with the devil,
dance is one of the ways humans may interact with the spirit
world. In pop culture, we share a fascination with vampires, werewolves,
zombies and other supernatural beings. As dancers, we portray supernatural
characters in our performances onstage. The notion of dancing our
demons is well known, but little understood beyond the theatrical
fantasy. There are cultures, however, where belief in spirits is
real, not fantasy. And dancing is a socially acceptable way to communicate
with spirits. Such rituals are ancient medicine, and a form
of self-healing that is still widely practiced throughout the 3rd
world today.
This workshop will explore the fascinating
realm of the Jinn and their relationship to dance. Jnun (plural
for Jinn) are invisible spirits believed to inhabit the earth and
influence mankind by appearing in the form of humans, animals, or
even part-human/part-animal. Much like ancient Goddesses, Jnun are
strongly identified with forces of nature and the natural elements
of fire, earth, water and wind. Like Godesses, Jnun have names,
personalities, and come from different regions of Africa and the
Middle East. Jnun are thought to live in a kind of parallel
universe to humans. They marry, make babies, and have individual
preferences for specific colors, foods and smells.
In modern culture, we deal with our anxieties
and emotions thru shopping, eating, drugs or alcohol, to name a
few. Modern individuals live more in isolation than tribal folks.
We modern folk are typically left alone to work thru problems on
our own, or with a doctor. In contrast, traditional societies tend
seek emotional healing within a community experience involving music,
chanting, drumming and "dancing in the spirit." When they
feel out-of-balance they attribute feelings of depression and anxiety
to a spirit inside of them that must be tended to… appeased and
released. And, so, a community ritual is held in honor of the
restless spirits that are bringing worry and stress to their human
hosts. When the music starts at sundown, those who feel the calling
get up and dance, often into the dawn. When the ritual is complete,
the spirits are appeased and the dancers are renewed. I think of
these rituals as an ancient form of Prozac.
THE WORKSHOP WILL BE TAUGHT IN 3 PARTS.
PART 1, we will learn about the history
and folklore of the Jinn including artwork and artist’s interpretations
of the Jinn. We will compare similarities and differences among
spirit rituals including Egyptian zar, Moroccan guedra, North
African hadra, and Gnawa lila. As I travel through North Africa and
the Middle East, I pick the brains
of everyone I meet for stories about spirits. I will share with
you some of the great stories from my own travel log and my personal
spirit quest among the Berber tribes of the Atlas Mountains, the
Gnawa “blue people” of the Sahara
Desert, and the Hamadsha Sufi Brotherhood in Morocco.
In PART 2, we will dance! We will begin with basic trance movements
and energy work using the whole body. These dances begin slowly
and gradually build to a vigorous frenzy. Please eat lightly before
class and bring knee pads, we will be working on the floor. FINALLY,
in PART 3, you will be guided thru a mock ritual in honor of 3 different
female spirits:
Lalla Aisha, daughter of the river and
mountains
Lalla Mira, daughter of fortune
Hajja Malika, crone with a crown of silver
Skill Level: Open to All
What to Bring: Please eat lightly before class and bring knee pads, as we will be working on the floor.
What to Wear: Comfortable dance attire
Lee Ali‘s Bio:
Lee Ali is a specialist in Greek and Moroccan folklore. Known for her explosive passionate performances,
Lee combines history, performance art, and social commentary to
create ethnic dance theater. She is dedicated to teaching American-born
dancers the beauty and value of ethnic dance and delights in passing
on the traditions she learned as a child.
As
a teacher, Lee is a multi-cultural shape-shifter who moves between
the free mindset of an edgy, modern artist, and the forbidding mysteries
of the ancient Middle East. Her workshops are a passport to foreign lands
and a window to the cultural psychology of dance. On stage, she
has delivered more than 2,000 dance and drumming performances in
theater, festivals, cabaret and film, both in the States and abroad
in Morocco, Turkey,
Greece and Egypt.
Raised in a Middle Eastern ethnic ghetto
by a Moroccan mom and a Turkish-Armenian dad, Lee began her career
as a child performer in the 1970’s, the golden era of old-style
American cabaret belly dance. Lee is a “home-schooled” bellydancer,
groomed in cultural traditions as an apprentice to her parents.
They taught her to dance, drum, sing, play musical instruments,
and to design and sew her own costumes.
At age 13, she became a working dancer,
performing only with live musicians, 5-nights a week in the ethnic
night clubs of Philadelphia’s
“Greektown.” At 15, Lee left high school to travel full-time with
Holiday In Greece, a Greek musical with whom she toured for 3-years
throughout the US, Canada, and Greece. At 20, Lee opened her own
dance studio in Brooklyn, New York,
where she perfected her colorful teaching style and her commitment
to building community thru dance. During the 8-years she owned the
studio, Lee became an IDEA certified fitness trainer and a certified
yoga instructor from the Satchidananda Ashram.
In 1996, Lee wrote and produced the documentary
film, “Belly Dancing In
America: Importing Middle Eastern Dance”. In 2000, she formed
the Berber Ballet, a dance and drum ensemble specializing in 6/8
rhythms and theatricalized trance dances of North
Africa. In 2008, Lee received the Golden Belly
Award in the category of Favorite Ethnic Dancer. In 2009, she was
awarded “Dance Instructor of the Year” at the University of California,
Irvine,
where she has taught beginner and advanced bellydance since 2004.
In addition to her full teaching and performing schedule, Lee is
an annual judge at the Bellydancer of the Universe Competitions,
and also served as a celebrity judge for the “So You Think You Can
Bellydance?” contest at the 2010 Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive.
She holds a double bachelors degree in Psychology and pre-medical
Biology from UC, Irvine.
